Melbourne’s 2 key saunas

Subway Sauna and Wet on Wellington – which to choose?

The honest answer is that they are both on a par with each other. But read on to discover any differences that might appeal to you.

The Buildings Themselves

If you’re a bit of an architecture-junkie like me, this will actually be a significant factor for you.

I really do just love the building that the Subway Sauna is in. Firstly, the brick exterior is very appealing (as seen in the photo above). And being under the line, you can hear the trains going by inside the sauna. If you are sat in the jacuzzi with your back to the wall, you are in a good position to admire certain industrial elements (e.g. large aluminum pipes from memory) before you.

And onto what the more normal people might appreciate about the building amenities: Subway Sauna has a lot of private rooms, at least a couple with televisions in the corner, several containing mirrors, and all of them very spacious. Lube is provided in dispensers by each private room’s door which is very convenient (because I think everyone loses an erection while trying to open those very tricky & tiny packets of lube for five minutes), and there is also a steam room, dry sauna, cruising area, glory holes, sling etc, plus different television rooms, one admittedly featuring porn, but the other two not – one of them showing free-to-air TV, and the other showing standard feature films, with chill-out areas accompanying them.

The Wet on Wellington facilities are also very good. Near the entrance, there is quite an impressive lap pool with chiseled sculptures to keep you company in there, with an adjoining cafe area, and an adjoining spa, plus a dry sauna just around the corner, and upstairs lots of private rooms and communal areas with a porn lounge, cruising area, glory-holes, sling etc spread over the two upper floors. There is also an outdoor courtyard/ smoking area.

So, for me personally, I find the Subway Sauna building most impressive, but Wet on Wellington definitely gives it a run for its money. Moving onto the next topic:

Location and Clientele

Wet on Wellington is located in the suburb of Collingwood, which adjoins the suburb of Fitzroy; among Melbourne’s most gay-oriented areas. There is a lot of nightlife in this area. When I went to this sauna, on a Saturday morning to early afternoon, that geography did result in a young guy being there who looked like he was about to pass out – a bit off putting. There were not many other men there, maybe ten, most of whom were around the age of 40 with the bald/shaved head look. But the staff member, who for context had no idea I’d be writing this, did inform me that men of mixed ages frequent the sauna, mostly in the mid/late afternoon and into the night.

The Subway Sauna is just a stone’s throw away from the city-centre, locally known as the CBD (Central Business District). This makes it ideal for a work-break-quickie for men of varying professions. Nevertheless, in my experiences there, weekday evenings and weekend days have been the busiest times. There is a mix of ages to be found here, including a few hot oldies, even if the younger crowd outnumber them.

In short: both of these saunas are centrally located and accessible, albeit in vastly different areas, which has somewhat of an overflow effect on the clientele to be found in each venue.

The Fine Print

From Monday to Thursday Wet on Wellington is open from midday till late (2 a.m. according to Google) and costs a $28 entry fee. From 12 p.m. on Fridays until 2 a.m. on Mondays the sauna does not close and costs $30 to enter during that time.

The Subway Sauna is open 24/7 and costs $30 to enter, with varying prices on certain days, details of which are linked to here.

At the Subway Sauna, you can get a re-entry card if you are returning within the space of a few hours. In the month since my visit to Melbourne, I have forgotten whether Wet on Wellington also provides this concession, but I think it’s very likely that they do.

End Note

I hope this post proves practical to your decision making if you are in Melbourne and unsure about where you want to go. In contrast to other websites, I highlight my personal experiences and observations on this blog, which makes it subjective, but also sets it apart and provides something relevant for others who are looking for places where mature-aged men are admired. If you like this type of content, do make a point to share it around to ensure the possibility for it to continue to be produced.

Best wishes to you and all and enjoy Melbourne if you make it down there!
